MarinePure™ Instructions
MarinePure is designed to be a substrate for bio-filtration, specifically to target ammonia and nitrite removal and to minimize nitrates. MarinePure is suitable for both freshwater and saltwater environments. MarinePure can be used fully submerged or in trickle/shower filters.
For Removal of Ammonia and Nitrates (Nitrification)
- Initial rinse of media with water to remove surface particulate created during shipping.
If tap water is used, perform second rinse with tank water to remove chlorine. - Locate media in filter, sump, under gravel bed, anywhere in the tank or as part of a reef structure. Locating within the flow of the water will give the most efficient results.
- NOTE: the product is easily shaped using a hand saw or coarse sand paper. Make sure to rinse particulate before placing in tank.
Wear a a dust mask to avoid breathing in particulate - Mechanical filtration of water, such as with matting, is recommended prior to water entering MarinePure product
For Removal of Nitrates (Denitrification)
- Initial rinse of media with water to remove surface particulate created during shipping.
If tap water is used, perform second rinse with tank water to remove chlorine. - Locate media in a passive location such as in a sump, under gravel bed, or as part of a reef structure.
- NOTE: If desired, the product can be easily shaped using a hand saw or coarse sand paper. Make sure to rinse off particulate before placing in tank.
- Wear a a dust mask to avoid breathing in particulate
Maintenance for Flow-through Filter Systems
- Periodic backwashing or rinsing using tank water suggested every 3 months or as frequently as necessary.

It works!
Performance: 100%
I started a reef tank using some great centerpiece-type texas holey rock. Since it isnt as porous as some of the other, more customary reef rock I had to supplement with marine pure. So far, so good, as my reef is 5 weeks in and properly cycled. Each time I test there are no nitrites or ammonia, despite heavy feeding schedule.

Going on week # 3 with just 1 8x8x1” plate and so far so good. It’s lowered my Nitrates already to Almost zero! I sawed very easy the Marine pure to custom fit under my sponge in the bubble trap area in the sump. I just order another box of the 1/2′ spheres so they can be placed in my refugium area along the side of my Miracle Mud tray and my mangroves. 5 stars across the board

If you’re not using MarinePure to supplement your biofiltration, why are you still waiting? This little 8x8x1 block will substantiate 30gallons by itself, that means you don’t need as much in the display, giving you the best opportunity to play with your aquascape and get creative! I have a 46g Bowfront and 1 block of this and had a blast getting my scape perfect for our home!

I have had the 1″ plate in my sump, located in the baffles where it can get the most water flow and my nitrates are practically zero.. I thought it was the test kit, so I used another test kit and still almost no color in the test vial…I wont say it zero, because the first two color options look the same to me (being color blind sucks..lol!)…

Great product
Performance: 100%
I keep putting more and more of this stuff in my sump as time goes on. About a month later I see a decrease in nitrates as a result. Even with a big eel, I’ve almost completely eliminated carbon dosing while maintaining nitrates around 5. I believe in this stuff whole heartedly.

Performance: 100%
I’ve been using marinepure for over two years now. The balls stay clean and are extremely porous! My water parameters always stay in check. I’m setting up another aquarium and will be using my existing marinepure. I will be ordering more to replace the existing balls! I 100% recommend this product! Its far superior to the Natural Porous Rock that I used to use. Great product! Its all I will ever use for bio-media!

These are perfect for the minimalist aquascaper. I am not a huge fan of huge piles of rock in my tank but really like having the beneficial bacteria from live rock…Marinepure is a great substitute for live rock and you don’t need 100’s of pounds of rock to do what these can do with one or two plates.

This it a perfect solution for nano tanks, I use 2 packs in my evo 13.5 and will support more than enough bio load for my nano reef. There about the width of a nickel almost like a ball but not round if that makes sense and they seem to hold up well and not fall apart like other brands. Marine pure is definitely the way to go for this type of media

Nitrate/Nitrite/Ammonia have been at an undetectable 0 since using these but I will say I used considerably more than needed for my 185g. Phosphate has not seen any decrease from these, in my experience, but I also have a lot of tangs I feed seaweed to daily. I scattered these around in empty space in my overflows and sump, they hold up well and haven’t deteriorated after more tha a year and are all just big enough that you don’t have to worry about them getting stuck in most places or pumps – they do clog if used without a filter sock in between them and the flow, however they unclog in just a second by simply holding them in a bucket of used tank water and shaking/swishing them around one-by-one (when I’m doing a water change) – it takes about 20 minutes to do this with 2 boxes and I do it about 2x a year but otherwise they are easy and maintenance free.

I have not had to clean my tank since I got these — I put them all over the bottom of the talk as well as in the recirculation, along with purigen. My tank was an algae fest and no more. Its been weeks of crystal clear water. I love it as media for the bottom of tank too cause you just push them around a little and any food or poop in there just moves up to the filter. And my fish like swimming down between the balls to look for food.

This is my second box for my BioCube 14 that I added a 10 gal sump to.
So I have one gallon of these in the sump, enough for 500 gallons per the manufacturer. My tank is testing at zero ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. I have only done one water change after the tank originally cycled in February. I feed one cube of frozen food daily to the three Chromis and have yet to get nitrate to register on my test kits.
I know the chaeto in the refugium is helping but I know these balls are working.

I would have to say that these work as advertised. I have read that you cannot have too much bio-filtration and I use this model in my reef tank. I have the spheres in my last compartment with the return pump and the MarinePure large cube in the first chamber. I have 0 nitrates and 0 phosphates and all I do is bi-weekly water changes. I have taken my GFO and carbon offline. I also am using the middle chamber as a refugium, but I think this is competing the nuisance algae as well. My tank is much healthier overall since about 6-8 weeks after adding all of the MarinePure into my system. I can’t necessarily explain just how, but everything about my system appears healthier from the fish to the corals. I finally have one of “those” tanks that I think is beginning to look like the ones on so many forums.

Our little 10 gallon tank was struggling to keep up with the shubunkin goldfish we got as babies. (They can breed with koi, that should have been a clue to me that they are HUGE fish.) I read about these and bought a box. I literally just tossed them in the tank, there’s nothing hard about it. But it made an immediate difference in water quality. The water cleared, the nitrifying bacteria had a place to live, and it cut water changes by half. Living in a crowded tank is not ideal, but if you ever need to do it, this will buy you time to set up a better situation for your fish. I will never set up a tank without it!
PS- transfer some balls from old tank to new tank to speed up cycling!

This filter media is absolutely amazing! It works sooooooo much better than regular bio-balls, some people may think that it’s expensive, but this media has much more surface area than other types of media, I have one marine pure block and one box of sphere and some bio-balls in my 300 gallon tank, the tank was heavily loaded, before I add in the block and the shpere, the water was always a little cloudy, after I add those in, the water cleared overnight.

I can’t say enough about these bioplates. I saw these on Bulk Reef Supply in one of their video series and decided to try them on my next tank setup. I now am convinced that every tank should have these in the sump. I work in a LFS that services reef tanks. We have seen a dramatic drop in problems since adding these to tanks. We have begun to replace all blue bioball systems with the plates…its simply no match. The bioplate clearly has a greater surface area for bacteria to colonize to and effectively reduces nitrates due to the massive increase in biological filtration. Anyone looking to run a system with a minimalist type of aquascape should drop a 8x8x4 block in their sump.
I used 1/3 of a 8x8x1 plate in my personal Nuvo 38 and the other 2/3 in a client’s 55gl. Both tanks saw a dramatic reduction in algae growth after 3 weeks (the time it probably took to colonize). I am no longer getting cyano in the nano tank which has plagued me for nearly a year and that was with weekly water changes (sometimes more). I have even added new fish to the tank finally.

5.0 out of 5 stars Denitrification in saltwater is actually possible
Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2015
Size: 4″ Block
Have now been using one of the large bricks in a moderately stocked 90 gallon reef tank for about 2 years now.
First off, the porosity of these bricks in nothing short of amazing. You can literally run water straight through the brick out of a water faucet without any flowing over the side. So at the very least, any tank is going to have a substantial surface are for nitrification. With the size of these bricks, I wouldn’t be surprised if a single brick could provide nitrification for a 500 gallon tank.
Here’s what really matters, denitrification. I was initially another skeptic that there was any chance of denitrification with this, but I’m almost 100% certain that it actually does support denitrification. Although this is anecdotal, my biopellet reactor has failed 2 or 3 times in the past 2 years, and 1 time was out of operation for about 2 months. At no point was I ever able to detect any nitrates in the tank, using a good salifert NO3 test kit. Previous to using this brick, I would get consistent nitrate increases over the course of 2 – 4 weeks when turning off pellets.
I’ve been keeping aquariums for almost 30 years now and I’m probably the world’s biggest skeptic when someone suggests any new method of removing nitrates without water changes, carbon sources, or anoxic sandbeds, but this one seems to actually work. I’m going to try them in a small pond and a separate FW tank and see if I can get denitrification in fresh water. If so, this is a complete game changer for FW aquariums, as there is almost zero way to reduce NO3 in small FW tanks and ponds other than water changes.
